Chlorinated Water Damages Your Brain
Water treatment hasn't changed much since 1908 when chlorine first was introduced. What has changed is our awareness of the hidden dangers of the chemical itself. Even so, chlorine still is used extensively to kill bacteria in municipal water supplies. Almost from the beginning, chlorine has had its critics. Concerned biologist and environmentalists have been on the trail of carcinogens in disinfected drinking water for a long time, but only in the past 20 years have such investigations gained national attention.
Most medical researchers were led to believe that chlorine was safe, but they now have learned that, while in the process of preventing epidemics of typhoid, cholera, and dysentery, we have created others. According to Joseph M. Price, M.D., author and noted chlorine researcher, "Chlorine has become the greatest crippler and killer of modern times, and the cause of an unprecedented disease epidemic, which includes cancer, heart attacks, senility, sexual impotency, and strokes."
The general public, and most water treatment officials, still believe chlorination remains the solution to making water safe. NOT SO! According to The National Academy of Sciences, "Chlorine interacts with naturally-found humus and humic acid (both produced of decaying plant matter) to form THM's (trihalomethanes). The most common of the THM's is chloroform which can cause liver and kidney damage, central nervous system depression, and is a human carcinogen."
Francis T. Mayo, Director, Municipal Environment Research Laboratory, declares: "Trihalomethanes in general, and chloroform, a known carcinogen in particular, are found in drinking water as a direct consequence of the practice of chlorination, a long-established health practice for the disinfection of drinking water."
According to Lance Wallace, EPA scientist, "Showering is suspected as the primary cause of elevated levelse of chloroform in nearly every home in America, because of the chlorine in the water."
According to biological chemist Dr. Herbert Schwartz, Cumberland County College, "Chlorine has so many dangers it should be banned. Putting chlorine into the water supply is like starting a time bomb. Cancer, premature senility--both mental and physical--are conditions attributable to chlorine-treated water supplies. It makes us grow old before our time by producing symptoms of aging, such as hardening of the arteries. When you drink chlorinated water, you should expect a premature end of cell-life!"
According to a recent study of the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, "Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine."
In July 1992, researchers at the Harvard University School of Public Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin, in studies published in The American Journal of Public Health, revealed that: "Chlorine used in municipal water supplies to kill germs may create chemical compounds that make people more susceptible to cancers of the bladder and rectum."
