Good day,

I was skeptical about the One Laptop Per Child (ONLP) initiative after learning that the cheap wind up laptops were only available to children from LEDC's.

OLPC helps Nigerian kids surf porn

Universal teenage fascination

THE ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD charity group is helping Nigerian kids browse porn online, according to the official News Agency of Nigeria.

According to the NAN, reporters had seen pornographic images being kept on several of the children's laptops. The One Laptop Per Child group exists to promote education by giving free educational PCs to kids.

Reuters has reported that a One Laptop Per Child representative has mentioned that the pilot scheme computers will be now fitted with filters to block out inappropriate material.

The NAN paper was quoted as saying that "efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials." Adult sites, or extreme biology?

I forgot about how inquisitive kids could be exploited like this. Now we know one of the reasons behind the ONLP.

Hi Far. I'm against censorship as a principle, but surely it's wrong to focus on the medium in any case? It's the child that determines what they see, not the PC. Some of the children might be using the laptops to visit truth sites - although I accept that the most likely outcome is that the young Nigerian will become increasingly pro-Western - which in turn means that they might tolerate the destruction of their country by the oil companies a little longer than they otherwise might.

You're pro-porn?

Since the laptops were aimed at children... are you pro-child porn?

Oh and http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=c...42&Itemid=1 the $150 pc, cheeper than the $100 OLPC....

Pro-western? I believe the correct term would be secular. Wouldn't you agree?

No, that's not what I said. I'm pro unrestricted access to information because I'm a libertarian. Quite different. At the heart of all law one finds moral codes, ie murder, rape and theft is a crime. I want to live in a society where I am free to come to my own conclusions, not one in which someone shapes my behaviour around concepts of what they'd like me to be. If I get the urge to become a child molester or a serial killer then I expect society to punish me. But would the availability of porn make that deviant behaviour more or less likely? The evidence is mixed and certainly not strong enough to start banning things. You (and I) may not approve of porn, but unless we can show clear harm then I'm loathe to start denying it to others. What gives me the right? Censorship equals tyranny in my book and it seems to me your argument is very close to the idea that ignorance is bliss. I can't accept that. We should be educating people to come to better life decisions and that's not best achieved by pretending that certain things don't exist.

In this case, I should add, I find it acceptable that restrictions have now been put in place. That they weren't put in place at the outset, is not, in my view, necessarily indicative of any conspiracy to corrupt the minds of Nigerian youth in relation to porn.

Good. Internet access is a mixed blessing, but it can only be a positive thing in terms of the logistical fact that poorer people are getting wider access to information and anything which promotes that gets my vote. (You see, in my world, everyone grows up to be a fully sentient philosopher king. I know it's nieve, but it worked for me and the alternative is too horrible to contemplate).

Yes it was a poor choice of word, though it's about commercialism and the cult of the individual as much as it is religion which is probably why I used the "western" shorthand.

I'll refer you to these two websites:

Turkey's Kurds and the Hotbird satellite channels

The porn myth

First of all, one is not speaking about censorship. That is up to the individual for themselves and also up to that individual to let other people know about what they believe in - unless it be dangerous to do so.

Unfortunately for my social ranking, information of finding out what people are like is bliss. I'm someone who prefers learning that which others care not to pay attention. Kinda like a contrarian.

Your remark of that if one did something that today is seen abhorrent, it's really up to the society concerned whether they wish to resolve the issue or not. And it is up to anyone else to do what they wish regarding this societies wishes, and the society in return for this individual... and a cycle of responses may continue to the infinite...

The point that was made previously is that this individual also sees porn abhorrent. Especially when an object has the ability to allow an individual such as a child to experience that abhorrent thing and even more so when it leads to promoting that which is abhorrent.

Never the less, one can write terabytes on this subject. Basically, a few questions I'd like to ask myself.

What caused the boom of pc's during the late 90s? The internet.

What is the most profitable venture on the internet? The porn and gambling industry.

What are the risks of porn? Lower libido, poor relationships due to the constant exposure of endorphins.

What are the risks of constant exposure to endorphins? You'll be into snuff in no time, that or you could ask those japanese women that love to read xxx comics. One day your a traditional housewife... the next day it's 1967 Summer of love looking for a bigger xxx fix!!!

Ahem.

What are the risks? Women concentrate less on children and more on providing for ones desires.

This means? The first time in the known history of organisms that a society concerns more about self than an "evolution" of the species.

And we care why? It doesn't sound like a human desire. Though it does sound like a Nazi desire to get rid of all the non-arians. Who were these Arians? Blond haired blue eyed full German breed humans? Then why were there a substantial number of Jewish officers in the Nazi army, not forgetting the stories about Hitler being 1/8th of a Jew.

I'm sure you've read the documents about the eugenics movement.

Though porn is only one tool in their box. They have many more that have an effect on the behavior of folks.
