USAF unveils airborne laser weapon
Press Esc
Saturday June 23, 2007

The United States Air Force today unveiled its futuristic airborne laser weapon, based on a modified 747 design.

"What makes this revolutionary is that you can engage targets at the speed of light – 186,000 miles per second," Air Force Col. John Daniels said. "So we can go from New York to Los Angeles before you can blink your eye. Think about that. You can't blink your eye faster than this weapon system or a beam of light goes across the country."

The Airborne Laser is being developed as part of the defense shield, A detection-and-tracking system, optics and a high-energy laser would detect a missile launch and track it during the boost phase.

Now once they learn to aim their target dummies properly Bush can go and declare WW III on rest of the world.

Sure is ugly. Looks like that nose-cone revolves so it can shoot upwards too. I wonder where the laser gets its power from?
Libra
Must use a massive ammount of power, the only way of generating this would be by engine driven generators or wind driven ones, it seems as if they have removed 2 engines from a 747 to make this which must limit the power it can generate

Interesting idea Libra. I'm not sure about it missing engines on the basis of those two pics, but it's odd that the outer two almost seem to have been kept out of shot deliberately. In the absence of further evidence I'd speculate that it has a nuclear reactor on board.

You're right Entropiate after examining the photo I cannot tell whether 2 engines are missing, I'll try finding more pics to satisfy my curiosity. The nuclear reactor is a good idea, never thought of that smile.gif , it would certainly produce the sort of power needed (Megawatt). I was asuming they would use electronics to produce the pulsed power from smaller, less powerful generators. I do wonder about the weight of a nuclear reactor but I have to say though, I am certainly not up to date with the weight/output of the modern reactors.

Looks like they've been public about nuclear powered aircraft for more than 50 years!

I wonder if it's unmanned? Certainly the weapon couldn't be operated by a human directly, ie like a tail gunner could it?
Libra
This is certainly something I missed (nuclear powered aircraft). They certainly have a Megawatt reactor that will fit in an airplane so I suppose the only problems they have had is with aiming the laser. The reactor must be safe enough (shielded) unlike the Russian one.
Entropiate
Safe enough?

hmmm.gif

Interesting concept.
